Galaxy S4 Puts More Features Into the Same Package By David Pogue-NYT

“We’re No. 2,” went the old Avis slogan. “We try harder.”
There’s a world of wisdom there. When Apple designed its original iPhone, it had zero market share; the company had nothing to lose by taking risks. As a result, the phone teemed with bold ideas.
But as the iPhone became more iconic and more important to Apple, the company’s courage to shake things up has dwindled. Why mess with a great thing?
That timidity gave Samsung the opening it needed. Its Galaxy S phone went after the iPhone with all guns blazing, and soon became a cellular celebrity in its own right.
When it was a distant would-be, Samsung had nothing to lose. “Let’s try making the screen really huge!” “Let’s try hand gestures!” “Let’s try eye recognition!”
But now here’s the Galaxy S4, the fourth incarnation of Samsung’s best-seller. (All four big United States carriers will offer it for prices from $150 to $250 with a two-year contract, or around $640 up front.) And here’s the funny thing: Now Samsung is starting to play it safe.
The Galaxy is still a beautiful, high-horsepower Android phone. But basically, it’s an updated Galaxy S3. If this were Apple, who adds the letter S to denote a slightly upgraded model (“iPhone 4S,” for example), Samsung might have called this phone the Galaxy S3S.
The S4 is the same size as the S3 (well, seven-tenths of a millimeter thinner). It’s still huge, more Jumbotron than index card. Good for maps and movies, bad for small hands.
And the S4 is still made of plastic — lightweight and grippy, but not as classy as the iPhone’s glass or the HTC One’s metal.
All told, nobody at the office will notice that you’ve bought the latest and greatest.
Yet Samsung has managed to cram better components into this wafer without increasing its size. The bright, supersharp screen is now 5 inches diagonal, up from 4.8; the margins have shrunk.
The battery is 20 percent bigger, too. That doesn’t necessarily mean much improvement in the one-day battery life, because the larger screen drinks up more power. Fortunately, you can still pop off the back panel and swap batteries, which you can’t do on an iPhone without a blowtorch. You can also expand the storage with a memory card; the iPhone can only watch with envy.
Most of the other changes in the S4 are software features. More than ever, Samsung’s design approach this time was, “Throw everything in and see what sticks.” There was absolutely no filter. There’s also no consistency, coordination or unified direction; it’s just a big, rattling cargo bay crammed with features.
A few examples: SMART SCROLL This is the S4’s much anticipated eye tracking. Like its predecessor, the S4 can recognize your eyes; it can, for example, dim the screen when you look away, to save battery power. In the S4’s video app, playback pauses when you look away (usually).
Better yet, the Web page or e-mail message you’re reading scrolls when you tip your head, or tip the phone a little bit. No hands! It’s unpredictable and gimmicky, but hey — it’s innovation, right?
AIR VIEW Point to the screen without actually touching the glass to get a pop-up preview of something. For example, point to a calendar square to see a pop-up preview of that day’s events, or to a Gallery thumbnail image to see the full-size photo.
Unfortunately, this feature is inconsistent. Why does it work in the Mail program, but not the Gmail program? (For that matter, why does Android require one app for Gmail, and another for other e-mail services?)
AIR GESTURES A sensor sees when you’re waving your hand — a feature that “really adds value when you’re eating with greasy fingers,” Samsung says. You can scroll a Web page or e-mail message by flapping your hand, or accept an incoming call with a wave. When the phone is locked and dark, waving makes the screen light up long enough for you to see the time, battery gauge and notification icons.
S TRANSLATOR Supposedly, this app is the universal translator of sci-fi dreams. You type or even speak in one language; the phone displays and speaks a translation in another. It sort of works when you type, about as well as Google’s translation page. But the phone makes mincemeat of spoken utterances — and that’s before it tries a translation. Sorry, Trekkies.
These gee-whiz recognition features work only in certain apps; learning which ones takes some time. And some come turned on, some off; the decisions seem arbitrary. When you first turn on your S4, you’re offered a list of them, with explanations, but my S4 ignored some of the selections I made there.
Nor is that the only bug. My unit crashed constantly, dumping me unceremoniously out of the Camera app or the Settings pages and instantly forgetting preferences I’d set.
The camera is very good, but the 13-megapixel photos are slightly soft and, in low light, grainy. The Camera app has received a makeover, too, following the same feature philosophy: anything goes.
You can snap stills while recording video. You can film in slow motion or fast motion. You can apply Instagram-style filters (weird colors, aging effects) to either stills or video, and preview the effect before you take the shot. That’s not even counting the specialty modes:
DRAMA SHOT The phone takes dozens of photos of a moving subject (a skateboarder, say). The software creates a single composite shot, displaying several copies of your skater in various stages of motion.
ANIMATED PHOTO You create a movie, and then paint out portions of the scene that you want frozen. The result: a still photo where only one element (say, a ceiling fan or a fountain) is moving.
DUAL CAMERA Both the back and front cameras are active. You, the photographer, appear in a movable inset within the larger photo or video.
Most of the inset styles include silly frames: a heart, a postage stamp, a fisheye bulge. But one style, a screen that’s evenly split between front and back cameras, can be incredibly useful. It lets you film host and interviewee simultaneously, for example, or narrate an unboxing while remaining on camera.
Here’s a twist for you: The best new S4 feature is one that hides most of them. It’s Easy Mode, and it will make a lot of people very happy.
In this mode, the S4’s feature snowstorm clears up. There are only three Home screens, and the icons on them are big, few and clear, like Camera, Internet, Phone, Messaging. Some apps have been simplified and given bigger, bolder fonts: Calendar, Settings, the dialer, Email and Messaging. In the Web browser, a handy + button pumps up the type size.
Samsung doesn’t exactly say that the new Easy Mode is for old people. But clearly, it’s for people who favor large type and simple functions.
And why not? Until now, phone hardware advances — faster Internet, better cameras, nicer screens — have been accompanied by increased software clutter. But why must they go hand in hand? Why shouldn’t you have a state-of-the-art phone with a clean interface?
In the end, the Galaxy S4 is a good choice for people at opposite ends of the technical spectrum: gadget hounds who love to customize at one end, and (thanks to Easy Mode) the easily overwhelmed at the other.
For everyone else, the S4 may be buggy in spots and laden with not-quite-there features. But the basics are excellent; this phone is still a fast, bright, handsome pocket rocket. It easily earns its place as a successor to the Galaxy S3 and a rival to the iPhone.
Next time, it may be Apple’s turn to try harder.

2 Tools For Converting Movies For Viewing On a Smartphone

2 Tools For Converting Movies For Viewing On a Smartphone

convert movies smartphoneMovie files are generally not optimized for the smartphone. They often take up too much space and may be encoded in a format that the smartphone can’t play back very easily. If the movie in question is on a physical DVD, it will need to be “ripped” into a standard video file before you can play it.
Video conversion isn’t as essential as it used to be when playing videos on a modern smartphone. With apps like VLC for Android, you can play videos of almost any type or size directly on your smartphone. However, you may still want to convert a movie before viewing it to save precious storage space on your smartphone and get more battery-efficient playback.

HandBrake

HandBrake is one of the more popular video conversion tools. These apps are referred to as “transcoding” tools, because they can convert videos from one encoded format to another encoded format. We’ll be focusing on the Windows version here, but HandBrake also runs on Mac OS and Linux. You can download Handbrake for any platform from its website.
HandBrake also offers DVD-ripping capabilities, so you can convert a movie from a physical DVD to a file you can watch on your phone. To do this, you’ll need to install the DVD43 software for Windows, which bypasses the DRM included with DVDs to allow this ripping. Depending on the country you’re in, this may technically be illegal.

After installing and launching HandBrake, click the Source menu and choose the type of video you want to convert. Select Video File for a single file or Folder to convert all video files in a single folder. If you want to convert a DVD, insert the disc into your computer and it will appear in the Source drop-down box.

Once the file is added, you can start tweaking your conversion settings. If you added a DVD, click the Title box and select the appropriate section of the DVD.
Whatever you’re converting, you’ll need to specify a destination. You can enter a destination for this conversion using the Destination box. If you’d like HandBrake to take care of this automatically in the future, you can open its options window (Tools -> Options), select the Output Files tab, and enter a default location in the Default Path box. For example, you can have HandBrake automatically save all converted video files to your desktop or another easy-to-access location.
To quickly select appropriate transcoding settings for your device, click an option in the Preset column. There are options for the iPhone and different types of Android phones, as well as other devices like the iPod Touch, iPad, and Apple TV. You can also select one of the normal profiles.

view movies on smartphone

You can optionally modify the conversion settings after selecting a preset. For example, the Picture tab allows you to set a custom width and height for your video file. However, you’ll probably be fine if you stick to the default settings.
Once you’re ready to perform the conversion, click the Start button. HandBrake will convert your selected source video and create a new video in the destination folder you specified.

You can now copy your video file to your phone by connecting it to your computer with a USB cable or, if it’s an Android phone, using the excellent AirDroid app to transfer the video file to your phone over Wi-Fi.
If you’re converting a lot of videos on a regular basis, you could use DropFolders along with Handbrake to automatically convert video files you add to a specific folder on your computer.

SUPER

SUPER is a Windows application with its own cult following. Kannon recently dubbed it a “HandBrake killer”, noting that “no free (or paid) video software in its class matches the versatility and broad file-type compatibility of SUPER.” SUPER offers more power and options than HandBrake. It’s also more compatible with different video formats. HandBrake has removed support for AVI, XviD, and OGG/OGM codecs, but SUPER still supports these formats.
However, SUPER is a much more complicated application with a user interface that isn’t nearly as user-friendly. It also installs adware during the installation process, which you must immediately uninstall after installing SUPER if you want to keep your Windows system clean. And it’s Windows only, so Mac and Linux users are out-of-luck.
If you’re interested in SUPER, head on over to Kannon’s guide to using SUPER, where he’ll walk you through dodging the adware and getting to grips with SUPER’s interface.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3: Design

galaxy-s4-vs-galaxy-s3-design

Both are having same DNA; Being a big brother, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has a slight monopoly over the dimensions but Galaxy S4 is about 1 mm slim when compared to Galaxy s3. I think Samsung makes him to diet for all these days.  The Samsung Galaxy S4 has no huge color variation like S3, it comes in black and white finishes, where the Samsung Galaxy S3 bags a wider variety of shades, including blue and red.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Screen

galaxy-s4-vs-galaxy-s3-screen

Both Samsung mobile phones feature AMOLED panel technology but the pentile array technology helped Samsung Galaxy S4 to accommodate more pixel count than Galaxy S3. Technically speaking it uses RGBG (Red Green Blue) array rather than RGB. The Samsung Galaxy S4 display upped slightly to 4.99 inches from 4.8 of Galaxy S3.  In the case of the resolution also a huge difference is there. Samsung S4 mobile phone has a whooping 1080p resolution whereas S3 got struck in 720p.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3 – CPU

s4 vs s3 processor
The Exynos 5 chip of the Galaxy S4 has twice horsepower than a quad core which S3 has on its board. The arrangement is  like two quad-core processor jammed together. S4 is using Cortex-A15 performance cores and the S3 have Cortex-A9 cores, designed for conserving battery life when doing low-demand everyday tasks. With a high clock rate and extra 1 GB RAM S4 clearly owns a cut above the S3 in this section.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3- Camera

galaxy-s4-vs-galaxy-s3-camera

Samsung Galaxy S4 sports a camera sensor of 13 Megapixel and Galaxy S3 have 8MP. To be frank 13 MP is not a big deal. In low light conditions both cameras will gasp.  But in good light condition, S4 will perform well when compared to other Samsung mobile models. The new features like Dual shot, Drama shot, Eraser shot, Sound shot etc are some added advantage of Galaxy S4 among S3.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S3- Software

Samsung has introduced a group of newbies with the Samsung Galaxy S4. Air Gestures, Smart Scroll, S Translator, a redesigned camera app and Group Play are the highlights for this Samsung Latest model. Read their full explanations here. Running on Android 4.1.2, Samsung Galaxy S3 lacks these features.

Our Answer

The result of the analysis is clear as crystal. Sorry Samsung Galaxy S3 users; If you want to move with the drift of technology, an update is badly required for your Samsung Smartphone. Samsung officially announced about the major firmware update to S3 but it doesn’t have the hardware support to carry AirView and Smart gesture features. So if you want to experience all the latest trend with your senses, it’s the time to break your money pot and go for Samsung Galaxy S4.

Top 10 New Features of Samsung Galaxy S4 Android Phone

Top 10 New Features of Samsung Galaxy S4 Android Phone

Samsung Galaxy S IV was launched amidst much fanfare at New York’s Times Square. While the phone doesn’t look much different from its predecessor, the Galaxy S III, in terms of design, it sports several new smart features. We’ve seen some in other phones, while a large set of them are totally new.
Samsung's new Galaxy S4 Look
At first glance, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the Galaxy S 4 for the Galaxy S III. The phone sports a very similar look and feel to its predecessor, in a slightly thinner body, with a slightly larger 5-inch screen. The handset is made entirely of polycarbonate, and will be available in two options: black mist and white frost.

Samsung Galaxy S4 specifications and features

The phone has an updated 1080p Super AMOLED screen. Depending on the market you’re in, you’ll get a 1.9Ghz quad-core processor or a 1.6 octa-core processor under the hood as well as 2GB of RAM.
An IR-blaster built into the phone allows it to replace your television’s remote control. Samsung’s WatchOn software works as a virtual TV Guide of sorts to enhance that experience.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Vs Galaxy S3
A 2,600mAh battery powers the handset, and while Samsung didn’t specify at the event what that 2,600mAh would get you, it did say that it was constantly working on software tweaks to ensure you get the most out of that battery.
The Galaxy S 4 comes running Android 4.2.2, currently the most recent version of Android. Along with Android’s stock features, Samsung has added a number of other Galaxy-specific software features to the phone that make it stand out from the pack.
The specs of the device are as follows:
  • CPU: 1.6GHz Exynos Octa-core chip or a 1.9GHz quad-core Qualcomm, depending on your region
  • Memory: 2 GB DDR3 RAM
  • Storage: 16/32/64
  • Battery: 2600 mAh removable
  • Connectivity: 4G LTE on all networks with LTE Roaming
  • Display: Full HD Super AMOLED screen, 441ppi, Corning Gorilla Glass 3
  • Camera: 13 MPDual Camera, 2 MP back camera
  • Body: 130 grams, Polycarbonate case in two flavors: Black Mist and White Frost
  • Features: Samsung Knox, S Health, S Translator, Group Play for playing the same music on multiple phones, Samsung Home Sync, Air View touch-less interface, Smart Scroll, Smart Pause, Sound and Shot.
  • Operating System: Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

Top 10 New Features of Samsung Galaxy S 4

Here’s a look at ten such features:
1.Smart Pause/Smart Scroll: Samsung takes the Galaxy S III’s Smart Stay feature a step further, and senses when you look at the screen of the phone or away from it, automatically scrolling up and down websites and e-mails, and pausing and resuming videos.
2.Air View/Air Gesture: With Air gestures you can simply move your hand to accept or reject calls, change music tracks, browse the web and your photo galleries without actually touching the phone. Air gesture, on the other hand lets you preview emails, photos and other content by hovering your finger over the screen.
3.Group Play: You can transfer and instantly view or play documents, music files, photos, and other content to other Galaxy S4 handsets. It even supports multi-player games.
4.S-Voice Drive: Samsung adds a new interface to its S-Voice voice assistant to offer functionality when you’re driving.
5.S-Health: You can track your workouts, daily intake and weight, and monitor your blood pressure, and blood glucose levels with the app.
6.Temperature and Humidity sensors: The Galaxy S4 also features temperature and humidity sensors to know the current status of your surroundings.
7.Dual camera features: The phone allows you to simultaneously shoot with its 13-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras. So you can place yourself in a group photo while shooting it or give a peek of your surroundings while being on a video call.
8.Sound & Shot feature: You can capture  up to 9 seconds of audio while capturing a picture to make it more interesting.
9.Drama shot: You can combine all stages of action that takes place in burst mode into one photo with this feature. So if you’re taking a photo of someone running, you can combine many pictures to depict the act of running in one picture.
10.S-Translate: The phone translates voice and text on the fly through this tool. It is integrated with the e-mail and messaging app, in addition to being present through a standalone app.

Price and Availability

The device will be available in 155 countries, starting at the end of April. No words on the pricing though. That’d be region specific, specially considering that Samsung has different hardware in terms of CPU and also the features offered, for different regions. We shall soon let you know region specific prices.
